Texas House Democrats broke quorum twice to delay the passage of what they call a voter suppression bill, but on Tuesday, Gov. Greg Abbott made Senate Bill 1 law. "It does make it easier than ever before for anybody to go cast a ballot," said Abbott. "It does also, however, make sure that it is harder for people to cheat at the ballot box in Texas." Local community leaders are asking for more than traffic improvement to come from a plan to upgrade Interstate 35 through downtown Austin. They also want it to improve the quality of life and perhaps even race relations in the city. Read more here.
On August 19, the Austin Police Department say they found a 51-year-old man in the middle of the highway, who officers say was aggressive when they approached. APD has released video footage of this officer-involved shooting, which can be seen here.
