If Frederick Douglass rightfully asked the question, "What to the slave was the Fourth of July?", then contemporary African Americans might similarly ask what this day means to them against the backdrop of mass incarceration, racial segregation, mass unemployment, mass poverty, and a COVID-19 pandemic that has disproportionately scarred the entire Black community.

"King noted that Black Americans had historically received a "bad check," yet refused to believe "that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation." He closed this speech by arguing that when America at long last fulfilled its original promise, matched word on paper with public deeds in action, it would give new meaning to patriotic expressions of love of country."
